The story opens soon after staff and patients at Carrington Psychiatric Hospital were informed that their asylum was to be closed. Many patients viewed the hospital as their home and expected to see out their days there. Many staff had set up a lifestyle that revolved around the hospital and were not confident of their ability to survive in the outside world. Adding to this was the reality that mental health and addiction problems were common among the staff. Robin was one such nurse. When he experienced stress, his pattern was to leave and relocate elsewhere in the hope that a stress-free life was waiting for him somewhere out there. He is persuaded that this is a myth and sooner or later he will need to stay where he is and face himself. As he enters therapy and begins working on his issues, he becomes aware of a group of tough male nurses who have set up a fiefdom designed to meet all their desires. These men cause a lot of harm to anyone not in their inner circle. Robin can either sit on the sidelines, as is his habit, and ignore what is happening, or he can take a risk and do all he is capable of to shut down the fiefdom. He takes a
