Matangini Hazra, popularly known as Gandhi Buri, is one of the inspiring figures of the freedom movement of India. Daughter of a poor peasant, Matangini Hazra was married at the age of 12, and six years later, she was widowed. She was an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi. She worked for social welfare and actively participated in the freedom movement. During the Quit India movement, Gandhi Buri, who was 73, led a procession of 6000 freedom fighters. The British police tried to stop her and shot bullets at her repeatedly.
